By 1750 spelling started to stabilise. This must have been a time when families started to learn how to spell their own name rather than relying on the local priest to spell it for them! By then, most of the twenty nine different spellings of the name had been created.

Although there are many branches of the family with different spellings, it is important to remember that they all originate from the single ancestral family that settled in Fazakerley, sometime around the 12th century.  So, no matter how they spell their name, they are all directly related.
